What's involved

Every patio begins on site, with a look at the levels, the drainage and the way the light falls. We prepare a proper sub-base, lay to falls so water runs where it should, and finish the edges — a curved wall, a run of steps, a border of setts — so the whole thing reads as one piece. Once it's down, a patio of this kind asks very little of you: an occasional sweep and wash keeps it right for years.

A drive is the first thing a house shows the road, and the surface it stands on has to carry weight for years. We lay ours to suit the property and the budget both — in keeping with the house, and built on groundwork that lasts.

The surface is only as good as what's under it, so we start with the sub-base and the drainage. Every drive is laid with proper preparation and SUDS-compliant drainage as standard, so surface water has somewhere to go. On top, the choice is yours — stone, gravel or block paving, worked to sit right with the property.

A boundary does quiet, daily work: shelter, privacy, and the line that marks where a garden begins. We build ours to be dug in properly and set to last, not knocked up to look right for a season.

What's involved

The difference with fencing is almost always in the groundwork — how deep the posts go and how well they're set. We take the time over that, then finish the run cleanly. Much of our work comes by recommendation, from customers who pass our name to family and friends, which is the standard we build to.

The trade runs in Chris's family, and building is where it started. It's the heavier construction work that most landscapers won't take on — and the reason a garden wall, a set of steps or a whole extension can be built by the same hands that lay the patio beside it.

A lawn is the softest part of the work, and the one people stand on most. We lay both — natural turf, and artificial grass for the places that take harder wear — and advise on which suits the spot.

What's involved

Natural turf has its season: it takes best laid in the autumn and through into the winter, on ground that isn't wet or frozen. Artificial grass has no season at all — it can go down at any time of year, keeps its colour through every month, and stands up to children and heavy use where a natural lawn would struggle.

The planting is what turns built ground into a garden. We put in the beds, the shrubs and the hedges — and take on the heavier tree work too, when a job calls for it.

We're glad to work alongside a garden designer or to plan the planting with you ourselves, advising on the right shrubs and flowers for each spot and how a bed will read once it's grown in. Instant hedges are a good way to screen a boundary softly, and come at different stages of maturity. Where trees need felling, pruning or stumps removing, our team will advise on the right course before any of it starts. The aim, always, is a garden that looks as though it has been there for years.

Resin-bound drives have become a common sight on Salisbury's residential roads, and it isn't hard to see why: they are permeable, low-maintenance, and can often be laid straight over an existing surface with no digging out. With the range of colours and finishes available, they suit everything from a period cottage to a contemporary build.

From our base in Salisbury we've refined every part of the process. We start by listening to what you want and looking at what the site allows — checking access and drainage, and spotting anything that needs attention before the surface goes down. A good deal of the old concrete on Salisbury drives can be kept: we repair it and lay the resin over the top, rather than break it out and start again.
